Founded in 1732, Georgia is a country of Transcaucasia located at the eastern end of the Black Sea on the southern flanks of the main crest of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. In 1936 Georgia became a constituent (union) republic, declared sovereignty on November 19, 1989, and independence on April 9, 1991. Georgia has 159 counties, more than 500 municipalities, and hundreds of special district. The 3.7 million population includes four-fifths of Georgians; the rest are Armenians, Russians, Azerbaijanis, and, in smaller numbers, Ossetes, Greeks, Abkhazians, one-third of African-Americans, two-third of Europeans and others. Georgia encompasses a humid subtropical climate, with most of the state having short, mild winters and long, hot summers.
